Description
Monstrato is a story about a troubled teen discovering her moral voice as she battles injustice at a corrupt charter school.
School is supposed to be the easy part of Macy's life, and she already has enough to worry about between her narcissistic mother and mentally disturbed friends. But Macy also attends LifeGate Academy which is ruled by a tyrannical principal and her spoiled, 17-year-old daughter, Corena.
As a member of Corena's inner circle, Macy enjoys the favoritism that Corena's mother showers on Corena and her friends. But when Corena sets her sights on Macy's boyfriend, Macy soon finds herself single and ostracized, watching as Corena and her cohorts flaunt the rules and wreak havoc on the school. Now Corena is using her power to go after the few friends that Macy has left, and Macy sees students and teachers turning their heads and pretending that it's not happening. Macy is determined that someone should stand up to Corena and her mother, but she's scared to do it alone, and no one seems to share her outrage. Disturbed by the apathy that she sees around her, Macy vents her frustration in an essay on the school's computer and inadvertently puts herself on a collision course with Corena's mother, the school's principal.
Set in a semi-urban, industrial landscape, this 70,000 word, first person narrative offers a realistic portrayal of a teenager's disillusionment with authority and her eventual self-actualization.
